Het titelnummer
THE WRESTLER, geschreven en uitgevoerd door Bruce Springsteen, is de titelsong van de gelijknamige nieuwe film. Een akoestische versie wordt gespeeld tijdens de aftiteling en in de trailer is het nummer ook prominent aanwezig.

Springsteen en Rourke
Bruce Springsteen en Mickey Rourke hebben elkaar begin jaren tachtig in de ‘Stone Pony’ ontmoet. Ze werden motormaatjes in ’89 en ’90 toen Springsteen in LA woonde. Volgens regisseur Darren Aronofsky is Springsteen een grote fan van Rourke. Hij heeft al zijn films gezien en hoopte dat Rourke snel zijn filmcarrière zou hervatten. Hij volgde wat hij deed en was benieuwd naar zijn projecten, maar de mannen “ hebben geen contact gehad tijdens Mickey’s verloren jaren”. Rourke schreef Springsteen een brief en stuurde hem een kopie van het script. In mei 2008 belde Springsteen hem midden in de nacht op en vertelde hem dat hij in Europa op tour was en zei: ‘Ik weet niet of ik dit kan doen, maar als ik kan, dan probeer ik iets.’

Awards en nominaties
Op 11 januari 2009 won THE WRESTLER een Golden Globe voor Best Original Song. Toen hij de award in ontvangst nam, vertelde Springsteen kort hoe het lied tot stand was gekomen: "All right! This is uh... the only time I'm gonna be in competition with Clint Eastwood, I know that for sure [laughs]. Felt pretty good, too! [giggles] Anyway, Mickey called me in Ireland and he asked me for uh... some music, he told me a little bit about the character, he said some people invest themselves in their pain and they turn away from love and the things that strengthen and nurture their lives. He said this was a guy that didn't figure... hadn't figured that out. So I said, 'Well, I know a couple of those guys...' And so, the song. So... first and foremost, I'd like to thank Mickey. Without the call I wouldn't have written the song, without his inspiration. Thank you brother, for a beautiful performance, thank you. Thank you for thinking of me! Um... like to thank Darren and all the folks involved with the film for letting me be a small part of their picture, thank you!"
